  • Equine (Horse) Assisted Therapy

EAP is an experiential form of therapy that brings horses into the therapeutic process. Horses are highly intuitive and responsive animals, and their presence can help promote healing, growth, and self-discovery.  The horse's presence can help by providing a safe and non-judgmental space for the client to express themselves,  connect with their emotions, build relationships and develop coping skills. Horses give real-time feedback, so it is an approach that can have a profound impact over a short period of time.

  • How does EAP work?

EAP sessions involve a therapist, an equine specialist, one or more horses, and the client. The therapist will guide the client through either a non-directive experience ("how about spending some time out with the horses and we will....") or with the equine specialist, come up with more directed activities, such as, "with theses objects, build a maze and with the horse..."). Either is designed to help explore emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. We guide the sessions based on the client's goals and how comfortable they are with the horses. We often observe the horses and their actions, and other times we will interact more directly with the horses (brushing or playing with toys with them) - and use that information with respect to the client’s concerns and goals.

  • Individual

Individuals can benefit from time with the horses and the team to work on issues related to relationships, boundaries, coping skills, problem solving and trauma, among many others.

  • Couples and Families

Besides other issues, couples and families can improve communication and an understanding of one another quickly when observing the dynamics of the horses  since the herd can mimic our social dynamics.

  • Groups or Teams

We will be providing 3 different groups in early summer: Single Mother’s Group, and Adolescent Group and a Couples Group. The groups are 90 minutes and will start in June.

    Topics include:

    Single Mothers:

Boundaries and Healthy Communication, Building Internal and External Support, Overcoming Obstacles, Coping Skills, and Self Empowerment

    Adolescents:

Understanding Anger, Emotional Awareness, Resilience and Tolerance, Relaxation and Regulation, Better Communication and Sense of Self

    Couples:

Emotional Connection, Communication Skills, Coping Skills, Support Strategies, Navigating Transitions, Collaborative Problem Solving

Please us the link to do a survey on best times that you could meet - the schedule will be developed based on when the most people can make it to the barn.

  • Telehealth & Office-Based

While my primary modality is EAP, you don't have to work with the horses if that is uncomfortable or not appealing.  Telehealth is an option for a small number of clients, and always with existing clients. Office based sessions will soon be available in Mount Vernon.
